Mid-Century Modern Design Style

Updated: Apr 19, 2022

MID-CENTURY MODERN is a design style that focuses around simple, functional wooden pieces often made from teak and highlights curved structural elements.

__

BACKGROUND: This design evolved as a response to a post WWII environment where designers and architects wanted to marry the abundance of mass production and technology invented during the first half of the 20th century. Futuristic.

__

CHARACTERISTICS: This design style is rooted in functionality, clean lines, and simplicity. Authentic furniture selections are made from teak, but other commonly used woods are rosewood and oak. These types of woods were used to create the focal points of a mid-century design; for example, tables, desks, or storage cabinets. Metal, glass, and vinyl are also key characteristics. This design comes with the creation of unique shapes, specifically curved lines where we often see round sofas and oddly shaped coffee tables.
